DNB Gynaecology medico brutally attacked by patient kin at BSA Hospital Delhi

New Delhi: In a horrific incident that has sparked outrage among the medical fraternity, a second-year female DNB resident doctor from the gynaecology department of the Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital, Rohini, was allegedly brutally assaulted and harassed openly in broad daylight by the attendants of a patient yesterday.  

During the attack, the assailants reportedly tore her clothes and strangled her with her stethoscope inside the ward in front of staff and patients, leaving scratches on her body. However, no guards intervened to protect her from the attack, and the police have not yet taken any action in this regard.

According to a letter submitted by the Resident Doctors' Association (RDA), the resident doctor was attacked around 2 PM and was also verbally abused by the attendants during the incident.

The RDA pointed out that no security guard or hospital staff were present at the time to control the situation or protect the resident doctor. The immediate help came only from fellow resident doctors and nursing staff, who intervened to manage the situation.

In response to the incident, the RDA wrote to the hospital’s Medical Director demanding immediate action against the culprits. Their demands include the filing of an institutional FIR and informing the Resident Doctors' Association about the developments. They also requested the immediate termination of all security guards who were on duty during the incident and emphasised that these guards should not be reshuffled to other areas.

Furthermore, the association sought an urgent meeting with the Medical Director within 24 hours to request, without any presence of a supervisor and guards, to discuss a further plan of action. They warned that if these issues are not addressed immediately, then the resident doctors from all departments will suspend their duties.

"All the above to be addressed immediately as resident sentiments are hurt and such a deeply hurtful incident can lead to suspension of resident duties in all departments," the letter read. 

Publicly calling out the Chief Minister of Delhi in a post on 'X', Dr Dhruv Chauhan, National Spokesperson of the Indian Medical Association, Junior Doctors' Network said, "A female resident doctor of baba saheb Ambedkar hospital, Rohini was harassed openly, her clothes torn apart and attacked brutally leaving scratches on her body and there is no action taken yet everyone is calm as if nothing happened. Respected @gupta_rekha ji, if this doesn’t boil your blood and strong action is not taken then i dont know what will !"

Responding in the comment section under the post, a user said, "Very common in Delhi, my fellow working in one of the hospitals ( can't disclose name) said the class IV servant working there has sexually assaulted female patients and attendants, yet there has been no action on him. Delhi has a blind eye towards sexual assault cases and eve-teasing."
