Chikkamagaluru: A medical negligence allegation has been made against a doctor at the government hospital here after an attendant claimed that his patient was neglected while struggling to breathe in the emergency ward. According to the attendant, the doctor was reportedly talking on the phone, which contributed to his death.

The allegation surfaced after a video went viral on social media, showing a patient on a stretcher while a doctor was allegedly seen talking on a mobile phone. The person who recorded the video claimed that the delay in treatment led to the patient’s death.

However, the hospital administration strongly denied the allegation, alleging that the patient passed away from pneumonia and the doctor provided him with the necessary treatment, refuting the allegation of any negligence on the doctor's part.

As per the Deccan Herald news report, the deceased has been identified as a 60-year-old Manjunath, a resident of Lakshmipura village. Local residents stated that he was suffering from severe breathing problems and took him to the government hospital for emergency care.

The attendant alleged that Manjunath was gasping for breath, lying on a stretcher in the emergency ward, and the doctor on duty was allegedly seated and talking on a mobile phone.

It was further claimed that despite being at the hospital for a considerable period, the patient did not receive timely treatment and was shifted late to the intensive care unit. Due to the alleged delay, the patient died.

In response to the allegations, District Surgeon Dr Chandrashekar said there was no negligence on the part of the doctors. He explained that the doctor seen in the video had already examined the patient and was later using the mobile phone to check X-ray reports of another patient.

"Some people recorded that moment and circulated the video. There was no negligence on the part of the doctors,” he said. He further clarified that he himself reached the spot and admitted the patient to the ICU. However, Manjunath, who was suffering from pneumonia, passed away.
