In September, Dr. Aggarwal, former Professor and Head of the Department of Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology at the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS), Lucknow, was appointed to lead the institute.
Medical Dialogues had previously reported that three eminent doctors from Lucknow have been appointed as Executive Directors of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) institutions located in Bibinagar, Patna, and Rae Bareli, marking a significant achievement for the city’s medical fraternity.

Dr. Amita Aggarwal is a distinguished Indian clinical immunologist and rheumatologist, widely recognised for her research on autoimmune rheumatic diseases, particularly Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA). Born in 1960, she earned her MBBS and MD in Internal Medicine from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. Since January 1994, she has been associated with the Department of Immunology at SGPGIMS, contributing to the field for nearly two decades. Additionally, she has been actively involved with the Biomedical Informatics Centre in India as a co-investigator since January 2012, furthering research and development in biomedical sciences.
Her contributions have been widely recognised; she is a recipient of the Shakuntala Amir Chand Award from the Indian Council of Medical Research and the National Bioscience Award for Career Development from the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India. Dr. Aggarwal is also an elected fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, India, and the National Academy of Medical Sciences.

In her interaction with the faculty, Prof Aggarwal articulated her commitment to fostering a culture of teamwork, innovation, and institutional growth. She announced that she would visit every department to gain first-hand insight into their ongoing activities and requirements, and to chart a strategic roadmap for cohesive progress, reports Hans India.
