Dr Bheerappa Nagari takes charge as NIMS director
Hyderabad: In a significant announcement, Dr Bheerappa Nagari, Professor & Head, Department of Surgical Gastroenterology, has been recently appointed as the Director of Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) Hyderabad.
The Government Order (GO) in this regard was issued by the Secretary of Health, Medical & Family Welfare Department, Syed Ali Murthuja Rizvi, on Wednesday.
"Dr Bheerappa Nagari, Professor & Head, Department of Surgical Gastroenterology, NIMS is hereby appointed as Director, Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) under Section 17 (1) of NIMS act (Act no 13 of 1989) for a term of three years from the date of issue of this order," reads the order.

Graduated from Gulbarga University, Karnataka in 1985 and underwent higher surgical training in Mysore. In pursuit of further surgical training with a specialist interest in Gastrointestinal and Oncological surgery, he joined in Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences, Hyderabad in 1990 and appointed as a faculty of the Institute in Surgical Gastroenterology in 1994 and became Professor in Surgical Gastroenterology in 2010.
Dr Nagari has earlier served as an associate dean member for the Allied Health Sciences department from 2018 to 2020. He was also an analyst for the Diplomate of Public Board and Master of Chirurgiae (McH) in Surgical Gastroenterology at several universities since 2013.
He is a faculty of the National Board of Examiners for GI Surgery and is actively involved in the academic aspects of the National Medical Commission for assessing teaching and training facilities for granting NMC recognition for medical teaching facilities across the country. He also promotes higher surgical training opportunities for specialist surgeons by offering Fellowship in Advanced Hepatobiliary Surgery at NIMS, especially in Pancreatic Malignancy and corrective and restorative surgery for biliary complications.
As an academician, he presented 25 papers in various CME programmes and delivered 103 Guest Lectures at various national and international conferences. He has written eight chapters in textbooks related to the subject and published 65 scientific papers in various journals. He delivered six prestigious Orations, including A.K. Bhansali Oration in the National Conference of Association of Surgeons in India.
Dr Nagari has received many honours in the past, for example, the Limca Book of Records 2019 for effectively eliminating the biggest cystic tumour from the liver, Vaidya Ratna Award 2019, Telangana Health Care Award, Best Specialist of Telangana state in 2017, Vyagreswarudu Memorial Best Paper Award for the year 2000, Vydyasri award in 2008, among others.
