Renowned OB-GYN Dr. Subhash Nargolkar Passes Away at 79

Pune: Pioneer obstetrician and gynaecologist Dr Subhash Madhav Nargolkar, renowned for his groundbreaking work in instrumental delivery techniques in India, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 79. His five-decade-long contribution to women’s health earned him widespread respect and admiration within the medical community.

Dr Nargolkar managed one of Pune’s oldest private OB-GYN hospitals and was recognised for his meticulous clinical practice, academic integrity, and deep commitment to patient care.

He was a founder fellow of the Indian College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (ICOG), the academic wing of the Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecological Societies of India (FOGSI), where he served as vice-president and held multiple key positions. He was also a life member of several national medical bodies and made significant contributions to advancing safer childbirth practices in India.

A graduate of BJ Medical College and a former registrar at Sassoon General Hospital, Dr Nargolkar further trained in Mumbai and the UK. He went on to serve as a consultant obstetrician-gynaecologist at Indira Maternity Home on Jangali Maharaj Road.

He conducted over 25 years of research on obstetric forceps and authored the acclaimed monograph “Hay’s Obstetric Forceps”, detailing his modifications for safer use in difficult deliveries. His expertise led to invitations to lecture at world congresses in the UK, USA, Canada, Singapore, Israel, and Australia.

"We will always remember him as a disciplined clinician with a scientific bent of mind and an innovator who pushed for safer obstetric care," said senior gynaecologist Dr Ramesh Bhosale, former professor and head of the department of gynaecology at B J Medical College and Sassoon General Hospital, reports TOI.

Dr Nargolkar is survived by his wife, Dr Ranjana Nargolkar, daughters Gauri and Radhika, son Rohit, and his grandchildren. A condolence meet will be held in his honour at PYC Hindu Gymkhana (AI Hall), Deccan, at 6 pm on December 2, according to his daughter Gauri.
