Pune: In a major crackdown, Pune police have arrested a man who allegedly posed as a doctor for more than 32 years in the Bhavani Peth’s Kasewadi area, without holding any valid medical qualifications or registration.

The arrest was made after the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) Health Department filed a complaint as part of its intensified campaign against bogus medical practitioners. According to the Indian Express, Dr Vasundhara Patil, a medical officer at the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), has lodged the first information report (FIR) in this case at the Khadak police station on May 2, 2025.

During the investigation, it was revealed that the accused, identified as Gundu, was not registered with any medical council, yet continued to provide treatment to the public. The case details were submitted to PMC’s legal department, which confirmed that the individual did not hold any authorised medical degree. The department recommended registering a case against the person under Section 33(2) of the Maharashtra Medical Practitioners Act, 1961.

As per the news reports, the accused sought anticipatory bail in the Shivajinagar Court, which was rejected, and subsequently approached the Bombay High Court, which also dismissed his plea. Following this, he then went underground, remaining untraceable for several months.

A dedicated team from the Khadak Police, led by PSI Jaysing Dhadhe, tracked him down and executed his arrest. Gundu was produced before the Shivajinagar Court, where prosecutors requested his custody to probe his whereabouts during his time on the run and to identify anyone who might have helped him evade arrest. The court granted police custody until November 10, reports the Pune Pulse.

Meanwhile, the PMC Health Department has intensified its citywide crackdown on fake doctors. Similar cases have recently been reported in Warje, Katraj, and Loni Kalbhor, where unqualified individuals were illegally treating common illnesses like colds, coughs, and fever.

Officials have urged residents to verify the credentials of medical practitioners before seeking treatment, warning that consulting unqualified individuals poses serious health risks.
