Bathinda: Dr Anil Kumar Gupta, former medical superintendent of PGIMER (Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research) Chandigarh, has been appointed as the new president of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Bathinda on Thursday, August 3. 

Dr Gupta had previously served as sub-dean (research), Medical Superintendent (MS), professor and head of Department of Hospital Administration at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research. He began working as medical superintendent and head of department of hospital administration at PGI in January 1996.

He is a fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences and a recipient of a Commonwealth Medical Fellowship, in addition to other awards. He has also worked as a short-term consultant to World Health Organisation (Searo, Delhi) and WHO’s international consultant in Nepal, Bangladesh, Indonesia, and Maldives. 

Dr Gupta joined PGIMER on 9th Jan 1996 as Medical Superintendent cum Prof. & Head and rose to become the Dean of the Institute.

The doctor along with a team had developed a post-graduate course in Hospital Administration at PGI, Chandigarh. As per a media report in the Indian Express, under his leadership, PGIMER won ‘Best Hospital Award’, the ‘Best ROTTO Award’, and the 'Cleanest public hospital in the country during INFDOSAN 2016'. Further, he was responsible for initiating the health information management software ‘decision support system’ and the 'Tele Evidence' service, through which doctors give expert opinion in judicial process through video conferencing. 

He is currently working as an adviser to the Chhattisgarh government regarding matter of hospital administration and as a WHO consultant on a temporary basis. 

He will be responsible for approving appointments, policy, and new departments and facilities as the president of AIIMS Bathinda, reports TOI. The union government also announced the names of the newly appointed presidents of Rajkot, Guwahati, and Jodhpur-based AIIMS. 

Dr Gupta will replace Prof S C Sharma as the president of AIIMS Bathinda. Dr Sharma had worked as faculty at PGI Chandigarh in various capacities and later at the ENT department of AIIMS New Delhi before being appointed to this post.
