From Urology to Wildlife: Dr Barun Sinha's Photography Journey spans 55 countries

Patna: For Patna-based urologist Dr Barun Sinha, photography has remained a lifelong pursuit alongside his medical career, taking him from India's forests to the remote landscapes of Antarctica and more than 55 countries worldwide.
Dr Sinha began his photography journey in the 1970s, when photography involved film cameras, darkrooms and significant technical effort. His journey has since evolved from black-and-white film and colour rolls to digital photography and modern image-processing technologies.
Wildlife photography eventually became his primary interest. He has travelled extensively across India's major forests, spending long periods observing animals and waiting for the right moment to capture them. His photographic journeys have also taken him to Antarctica, where he documented wildlife in one of the world's most remote environments.

His work has earned him several notable distinctions in international photography. In 2011, Dr Sinha received the Master distinction of the Federation Internationale de l’Art Photographique (MFIAP) for a portfolio of 20 photographs featuring cheetahs. He also received the Associateship of the Royal Photographic Society of Great Britain (ARPS) for a portfolio of 15 nature photographs. Subsequently, he earned the Grand Master distinction of the Photographic Society of America (GMPSA), reports ETV Bharat.
His photography journey has progressed alongside a long medical career. Dr Sinha completed his medical degree in 1974 and MS in 1978. He later obtained the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS), Edinburgh, in 1982. He worked as a doctor in England and Saudi Arabia before returning to India and continuing his career through private medical practice.
Over the decades, he has witnessed major changes in photographic technology. From the era when film had to be developed manually in darkrooms to today's digital cameras and artificial intelligence-based tools, the process has become considerably faster and more accessible.
However, Dr Sinha continues to emphasise the importance of patience and observation in photography. He considers it a passion that complements his medical profession and has continued pursuing it through decades of travel and wildlife observation.
With more than 55 years behind the camera and visits to over 55 countries, Dr Sinha's journey reflects how a demanding medical career can coexist with a sustained creative pursuit.
