Ludhiana: Four senior doctors of Orison Super Speciality Hospital, Barewal, have been booked in a case following the alleged body-swap of two women at the hospital two weeks ago.

The names of the doctors have been added to the FIR after the police investigation revealed their involvement in the case. Among the accused are one senior gastroenterologist and three hospital directors.

The case relates to the death of 73-year-old Jasvir Kaur Sandhu, a resident of Moga, who was admitted to Orison Hospital for treatment of a stomach-related illness. According to her husband, Jasvir was undergoing treatment under the senior gastroenterologist, but she died on December 19.

Since their two sons were living abroad, the family requested the hospital to keep Jasvir’s body in the mortuary until they arrived for the last rites. However, when the family went to collect the body on December 22, they found that the mortuary fridge where Jasvir’s body had been kept was empty.

Following this, the hospital authorities tried to handover the body of another woman to the family, but when they checked her face, it wasn’t Jasvir. Later, the hospital authorities allegedly admitted that Jasvir’s body had been mistakenly handed over to the family of another deceased woman, Manju Diwan of Ludhiana. By the time the error was discovered, Manju’s family had already cremated Jasvir’s body, believing it to be that of their relative.

Then they filed a complaint, and an FIR was registered at Sarabha Nagar police station on December 22 against the hospital management and staff. Initially, the accused were not named. However, on Saturday, acting on the directions of the Ludhiana Police Commissioner, the police officially nominated the four doctors as accused in the case, reports The Indian Express

The FIR has been registered under Sections 305, 314 and 316(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deal with criminal breach of trust and related offences.

Further investigation into the matter is currently underway.
