GMC Idukki Dr Alwin Antony wins 2 Golds at World Medical Games
Thrissur: Dr. Alwin Antony, Associate Professor of Community Medicine at Government Medical College (GMC), Idukki, has brought pride to the state and country by securing two gold medals at the recently concluded World Medical Games in Spain.
A native of Alappad in Thrissur, Dr. Alwin was the sole representative from Kerala at the prestigious global sporting event dedicated to healthcare professionals. Known as the “Olympics for healthcare professionals,” the World Medical Games were held in June in Lloret de Mar, near Barcelona, attracting participants from over 50 countries.
According to The New Indian Express, his journey to the international podium began with an unexpected turn. What started as a personal commitment to fitness and sprinting evolved into a disciplined training regime that eventually led to national and international accolades. Dr. Alwin had discovered his passion for sprinting during his school years, but it was the support of his students at Ernakulam and Idukki GMCs and encouragement from members of the Indian Medical Association’s Cochin chapter that reignited his focus on athletics.
“I trained under Asian Games gold medallist and Arjuna awardee Joseph Abraham. I won silver medals at the IMA national sports meets in Vijayawada and Aurangabad and a gold at the MAC Open National Masters Athletics Championships. These experiences helped me perform well at the World Medical Games,” he said.
“At the event, healthcare professionals of various age groups from over 50 countries are bound together by a passion for sports rather than nationality. Winning gold for India in the 100m and 200m sprint events, especially when competing against the amazing French, Mexican, and Algerian finalists, was an emotional moment,” Dr Alwin further added.
He previously secured silver medals in both sprint categories at the IMA National Sports Meets held in Vijayawada (2023) and Aurangabad (2024). Earlier this year, he clinched the gold medal at the MAC Open National Masters Athletics Championships 2025. Dr. Jacob Abraham, President of IMA Cochin, told the Society, “Dr. Alwin is not only an exceptional doctor but also a remarkable athlete. We’re confident he will make Kerala and India proud at the World Medical Games.”
