Margao: Through a recent notice, the Goa Medical Council (GMC) has asked all medical practitioners in the state to renew their registration in the next 15 days to avoid having their names removed from the registrar of council members under the Goa Medical Council Act, 1991, and Rules, 1995.

The council has notified that medical practitioners must renew their registration within the specified deadline if their registrations are overdue for renewal as of December 31, 2023.

To guide the practitioners, the council has provided a set of guidelines for them to follow to renew their registrations. These include the practitioners who have not yet renewed their registrations will have to complete Form 10 and submit proof of completing the necessary Continuous Medical Education (CME) credits. Additionally, they are required to fulfil their payment obligations, which may include any applicable late fees.

A notice issued by Gajanan Keni, Registrar of Goa Medical Council mentioned, “Failure to renew overdue licences by all those practitioners within the period as stated above will result in removal of their names from register of members by following procedure as laid down u/s 23 read with rule 61 of Goa Medical Council Act, 1991 & Rules, 1995 in terms of a resolution passed at an ordinary meeting of Council held on 12-12-2023."

Every medical practitioner is bound to renew their GMC registration every five years for which they have to obtain 30 Continuous Medical Education (CME) credits. The GMC registration of medical practitioners is liable for cancellation if they fail to obtain 30 CME credits.

Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported that the Ethics and Medical Registration Board (EMRB) of the National Medical Commission (NMC) has made it mandatory for all doctors to attend Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programs and earn at least 30 CPD credit hours every five years.

The submission of the documentation of CPD credit hours is now mandatory for the renewal of the license of the Registered Medical Practitioners (RMPs), specified in the new Draft Registered Medical Practitioner (Professional Conduct) Regulations, 2022.

According to the Herald Goa news report, a total of 3,840 medical practitioners are registered with the Goa Medical Council (GMC) in the State of Goa as of October 16, 2023.
