Gorakhpur: In a shocking incident, a woman doctor from Ambedkar crossing was faced with an extortion letter asking her to cough up Rs 20 lakh and threatening serious consequences if the demands were not met in a couple of days.

The doctor received an extortion letter which mentioned that the extortionists would harm her if she failed to pay the demanded money within three days.

The extortionists wrote the threat letter and sent it through the Gola post office on September 25 addressing the doctor. However, the latter received the letter on Tuesday afternoon when she was on duty at the hospital in Ambedkar crossing. 

Keeping in view the sensitivity of the matter, the district police deployed a security force around the hospital on Wednesday. They also constituted two teams to investigate the incident.

The incident came to light after the victim informed the owner of the hospital who then alerted the police seeking help regarding the threats. Following this, a case was registered and an investigation was on.

While investigating the case, the police found two individual named Nadeem and Khursheed in the letter who wrote their address as ward number 7 of Gola town of the district. As per the content of the letter, the extortionists have demanded Rs 20 lakh from the doctor. The extortionists also threatened dire consequences if he reveals the letter to the police.

After tracing the location of the two suspects, the police interrogated them and discovered that they had no intension to harm the doctor and nothing suspicious was found from them.

On the other hand, a security arrangement was demanded by the hospital owner and in response to the request, the Police station in charge of Barhalganj Kalyan Singh said that two jawans had been deployed at the hospital and patrolling had been intensified around it.

The following request was made after the owner informed that this was not the first time a threat letter was sent to the doctor at the hospital. He informed HT, "One year ago I received threat letters demanding ransom and then the district administration provided security to me. The fresh threats have created fear in the doctors’ fraternity."
