Cyber Fraud

Hyderabad: A Hyderabad-based doctor was defrauded of Rs 47 lakh by cyber criminals who posed as representatives of a well-known retail garment brand. The fraud, which took place over a period of one month, has raised serious concerns about online fraud cases.

According to Siasat Daily, the doctor filed a complaint with the Rachakonda police stating that he had searched online for information, downloaded a form, and emailed it, expressing interest. A few days later, he received a phone call from a ‘franchise development manager’ who answered his queries and asked him to pay Rs 1 lakh as registration fee.

Over the next month, the fraudsters continued their communication, asking for additional payments under various pretexts. The doctor was led to believe that the fees were required for different stages of the franchise acquisition. The payments included Rs 8 lakh as a license fee, Rs 12 lakh as a security deposit, Rs 10 lakh for an NOC (No Objection Certificate), and Rs 14 lakh as an agreement processing fee.

Speaking to TOI, the doctor said he grew suspicious when they demanded more money. The accused stopped all communication when the doctor said he would pay the remaining amount directly at their main office, which they had said was in Bandra. By then, he had already paid Rs 47 lakh.

The police have since registered a case of cheating under Section 420 of the Indian Penal Code and violations of the Information Technology Act. The cybercrime branch is now investigating the case to trace the perpetrators.
