Illegal abortion of minor: Delhi doctor among 4 arrested

New Delhi:  A female doctor has been arrested after she allegedly performed an illegal abortion on a 14-year-old minor girl, who had been sexually assaulted by a man. Police have also arrested the man along with two others for abetment of the crime.

The accused has been identified as Dharmender, alias Raj. The other two men are the accused friends, a 35-year-old Manish Kumar and a 44-year-old Dilip Kumar Singh. The doctor, Babita Devi aged 35, has a clinic named Aditi Clinic where the illegal abortion took place.

Raj met the victim, a class X student, and became friends after exchanging their phone numbers. Later the girl was allegedly sexually assaulted by the accused and got pregnant. She then informed the accused about the pregnancy, after which he confided in his parents and sought abortion services from the clinic. He also instructed her not to tell anyone.

Following this, an abortion procedure was performed on her illegally. She was then admitted to an SGH hospital in Mangolpuri on April 22 with excessive bleeding. Doctors after conducting several tests revealed that her condition deteriorated due to an abortion.

Later, the hospital reported the case to the police. Police said, "the female doctor gave the girl some pills to abort the baby. She gave birth to a premature baby". The body of the dead baby was later buried by Dharmender and his friends.

A case has been registered at Nangloi police station and they have recorded the victim's statement and arrested the accused along with the other three for abetment of the crime.

"During interrogation, the man admitted to taking the girl's phone number and wooing her. He pestered the girl for a sexual relationship and eventually took her to the house of his friend, Manish in Nangloi and assaulted her there," said one of the investigating officers to TOI.

Investigations are underway to determine whether the female doctor has previously handled any similar cases.
