JIPMER doctor booked in alleged Rs 25 lakh job fraud case
Puducherry: A doctor at the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) has been booked by Puducherry police in connection with an alleged job fraud case. Along with the doctor, his driver and four others have been named in the FIR for allegedly duping a woman of Rs 25 lakh by promising to secure employment for her son at the institute.
The case was registered following a directive from a local court, as no action had reportedly been taken on the initial complaint. The allegations pertain to a promise of arranging a front office position at JIPMER in exchange for a substantial sum of money.
According to a media report by The Times of India, the complainant, a 49-year-old woman residing in JIPMER quarters, was introduced to the doctor’s driver. The driver allegedly claimed that the doctor could facilitate her son’s appointment at the institute and demanded Rs 25 lakh for the arrangement. Between 2020 and 2022, she reportedly paid Rs 15 lakh in two instalments to the driver.
Subsequently, she was introduced directly to the doctor. The remaining Rs 10 lakh was allegedly demanded to finalise the placement, which she paid in 2023. However, when no job was given, she later sought either the promised appointment or a refund of the money. The complainant further alleged that she was threatened with serious consequences.
She initially lodged a complaint with the D Nagar police on March 28, 2023. But when no action was taken at that time, she approached the court, which then directed the police to register a case and begin an inquiry.
Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported that an MBBS doctor from Haryana was arrested along with eight other people for allegedly masterminding a massive online investment scam that duped hundreds of people, including vulnerable account holders. The case surfaced in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ganderbal district and involves transactions worth Rs 209 crore so far, with officials estimating the amount could cross Rs 400 crore after full verification.
