Kangra police arrest doctor, seize 8.03 gm heroin

Kangra: In a shocking incident, a doctor working at a private hospital was arrested in Kangra after police allegedly recovered 8.03 gm of heroin, locally known as chitta, from his vehicle during a checking operation in the district. 

The seizure was made late on September 4, when a Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) team of Kangra police stopped a car near Hanuman Mandir Ghat on the bypass road.

The accused, identified as a 32-year-old resident of Old Chari Road, Kotwali Bazaar, Dharmashala, was allegedly found carrying the contraband in his vehicle, police said.

The checking was reportedly carried out after the CIA received information about the suspected movement of drugs in the area. During the search of the vehicle, police allegedly recovered the contraband and subsequently took both the suspected drug and the car.

According to a report by The Tribune, a case has been registered at Kangra police station under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The accused has been taken into custody as the investigation continues.  

The alleged seizure is now being examined as part of the wider investigation into the movement of illegal drugs in the region, with police seeking to establish whether the accused had any links to a larger supply network.

Police are now attempting to establish where the alleged heroin was sourced from and whom it was intended for. Investigators are also examining the circumstances surrounding the doctor's alleged possession of the substance.

As part of their strategy, the police are focusing on stricter checking drives and surveillance, particularly during late-night hours. Officials have also indicated that violations such as drunk driving and other traffic offences will be dealt with strictly in order to enhance road safety and maintain public order.

The Kangra Superintendent of Police has appealed to members of the public to inform the police about suspected drug-related or other unlawful activities. Authorities said the identity of those providing information would be kept confidential.
