KGMU Vice-Chancellor, 3 doctors booked for alleged unauthorized tubectomy in 2022

Lucknow: Four doctors from King George’s Medical University (KGMU), including the institute's Vice-Chancellor, have been booked on charges of criminal intimidation and forgery following allegations of unauthorised tubectomy during a C-section delivery in 2022.

According to the complaint filed by the patient's husband, the doctors allegedly performed the sterilisation procedure without their permission during the delivery. Tragically, their newborn son died shortly after birth. The man further claimed that the doctors also allegedly forged their signatures on the consent form and threatened to deny further treatment when confronted about the procedure.

The man further stated that his wife had begun suffering from depression due to the unexpected loss of their child and the unauthorised sterilisation.

Following a court directive, Chowk police registered an FIR against three doctors and the KGMU Vice-Chancellor under several sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including Section 420 (cheating), Section 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life), Sections 467 and 468 (forgery), and Section 506 (criminal intimidation).

As per a Free Press Journal news report, the case dates back to October 4, 2022, when the woman was admitted to Queen Mary Hospital under KGMU for delivery. She gave birth to a baby boy via C-section on October 5. Due to health complications, the newborn was placed on a ventilator and died a few days later.

It was only afterwards that the family allegedly discovered that the doctors had also performed a tubectomy during the surgery, despite their explicit written refusal to undergo the procedure. The husband presented the original consent forms as evidence, claiming the signatures were forged to authorise the sterilisation.

He also alleged that after raising the issue, the doctors began threatening him, warning that if he pursued the matter legally, his wife would not receive further treatment. After receiving no response from hospital authorities, he approached the Chowk police station on October 10, 2022, but claims no action was taken.

Following this, he lodged a formal complaint through the Chief Minister's grievance portal on October 13. As the situation escalated, the family shifted the wife’s treatment to Hardoi. Despite submitting repeated complaints to the Chief Minister, Police Commissioner, Women’s Commission, and Human Rights Commission, no solution was provided. Eventually, on July 20, 2024, the man approached the court to seek legal action, and the police registered a case against the accused.

KGMU spokesperson Prof Sudhir Singh told TOI, "King George's Medical University strictly follows all rules and laws. We have a proper legal cell for handling all types of legal matters. As and when we receive such documents, our legal team will thoroughly study them and take appropriate action as per the law. We will fully comply with the legal process."
