Thrissur: Dr Cyriac Abby Philips, a well-known Kerala-based hepatologist popularly known as "The Liver Doc," has been summoned by the Chief Judicial Magistrate of Thrissur in a criminal defamation case.

Sharing the summons notice on a popular social media platform 'X', Dr Philips stated that the case was filed by an Ayurveda manufacturer. According to him, the complaint was filed after he publicly spoke about the dangers of unregulated herbal and Ayurvedic medicines, which he said can cause liver damage.

The summons requires him to appear before the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court in Thrissur as an accused in the case.

"Got a summons from the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Thrissur District, to appear as "accused person" in a criminal defamation case under IPC section 500. Criminal defamation because I educated the public on the dangers of unregulated herbal medicine-related liver damage. Complaint filed by SNA Oushadhasala Ayurveda. Basically, Ayurveda practitioners and industry will do everything else other than proving their products work or provide anatomical and physiological evidence for Kapha, Pitta and Vata pseudoscience nonsense," he said in the post.

Dr Philips has been vocal about drugs or herbal products that may cause injuries to the liver for several years. Medical Dialogues recently reported about Dr Philip calling out an Indian company for allegedly misleading people with their so-called liver detox supplements, which, according to him, offer no health benefits.

He made the remarks in a viral video after a supplement company allegedly threatened legal action against another doctor, who had criticised their product for misleading claims. According to Dr Philips, the company behind the Miduty Liver Detox supplement forced another doctor to remove his video from Instagram after he pointed out that the product falsely claimed to "detox the liver," reduce pigmentation, improve skin health and also detoxify alcohol, which he said is "completely misleading".
