Maha: Man posing as Manchester Chief Surgeon on matrimonial site dupes woman doctor of Rs 5.36 lakh

Mumbai: A case has been registered against an online fraudster who posed as a chief surgeon from Manchester and allegedly defrauded Rs 5.36 lakh from a 52-year-old doctor on the pretext of marriage.

The victim doctor is a cancer immunologist who was cheated by the fraudster and lost her money by trusting the man.

Although an FIR under sections 419 (cheating by personation), 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) of the Indian Penal Code and sections 66C (identity theft), 66D (cheating by personation by using computer resource) of the Information Technology Act has been registered by the Vile Parle police, the accused is yet to be arrested.

According to a media report in The Free Press Journal, the incident started on the matrimonial website when the victim created an account in search of a partner to get married. The fraudster who created his profile as a chief surgeon at a medical facility in Manchester, United Kingdom, befriended the doctor on the website.

By talking online, the duo became close, and she came to trust the fraudster after he promised to marry her. The man grabbed the opportunity and demanded money to clear the taxes to build his hospital.

He told the doctor that he intended to set up a hospital in Nottingham and had procured medical equipment from Chennai but had to pay customs taxes. Therefore, he needed monetary support and asked her to lend him some.

Following this, she provided the required amount but the fraudster vanished after getting the money. When the doctor tried to contact him, his phone was unreachable.

Later, she realized that she had been duped and approached the police to file a complaint against the man.

Meanwhile, the police are investigating the matter and are expected to nab the accused soon after identifying him and his location.
