Mumbai: A private doctor was recently arrested by the police based on a complaint moved by a Covid-19 patient alleging sexual harassment by the medical practitioner in a hotel where she was under quarantine on Monday.

The doctor has been identified as a medical coordinator, in charge of a quarantine centre at Andheri MIDC area, who was hired on a contract basis by the BMC for coordinating with the patients and the medical staff lodged at the quarantine centre.

The matter came to light on Monday when the woman called the police control room and lodged a complaint, an official informed PTI.

Based on the victim's complaint, a case under section 354 (assault or criminal force to a woman) of the IPC was registered against the accused, who has been sent to 14 days in police custody.

According to the police, the woman was quarantined at a hotel in the Andheri MIDC area after she tested positive for coronavirus.

As per the latest media report by the Free Press Journal, the other members of the woman's family also tested positive and were quarantines at the same hotel. However, after the health of the woman's husband and mother-in-law deteriorated, they were admitted to a hospital in Panvel. The woman along with her child remained in the hotel under quarantine.

While commenting on the matter, Assistant Police Inspector Vaishali Chavan of MIDC police station in Andheri (E) told the daily, "The woman tried to contact the nursing staff and doctors to release her and her child from quarantine as she was feeling better and wanted to be with her family. In a bid to get the approval, the woman called the hotel-turned-quarantine centre's medical coordinator."

Following this, the Medical coordinator arrived at the hotel on April 12 and started having a conversation with the woman.

However, the woman alleged that the coordinator held her by force, touched her inappropriately and demanded sexual favours. As the woman started screaming the man left the room immediately.

"She then dialled the reception and reiterated the incident, following which the hotel staff alerted the police control room" added API Chavan.

Soon after getting the complaint, a team from MIDC police station rushed to the spot and arrested the medical coordinator of the Quarantine centre.
