Man arrested for threatening woman medical officer at Sholavandan Hospital

Madurai: In a shocking incident, the police have arrested a 24-year-old man for allegedly harassing and threatening a woman medical officer at the Government Hospital in Sholavandan. The incident has once again brought to light the safety concerns faced by healthcare professionals working at government hospitals.

According to the police, the accused was admitted to the Sholavandan Government Hospital on January 9 after inflicting cut injuries on himself with a blade while under the influence of alcohol. During his hospital stay, he allegedly threatened the doctor to provide him treatment.

The accused was later referred to the Government Rajaji hospital (GRH); however, he fled from the GRH and returned to the Sholavandan GH and again harassed the doctor on Monday, reports the Hindu

Following a complaint lodged by the doctor, the Sholavandan police arrested him for using abusive language and preventing a government official from discharging her duty. He was produced before a magistrate and remanded to judicial custody.

In a separate incident highlighting concerns over the safety and dignity of women healthcare professionals, another woman doctor was allegedly subjected to harassment by a senior colleague in Karnataka.

Medical Dialogues had previously reported that a medical superintendent at the Community Health Centre (CHC) in Kanas has come under scrutiny after allegedly making inappropriate remarks, proposing to a female AYUSH doctor, and offering her a promotion in exchange for a "one-night stand", officials said. The woman doctor reportedly rejected his proposal and approached the police and filed a complaint against him at the Airfield Police Station. Based on the complaint, the police registered an FIR and arrested the accused under the relevant BNS sections. According to news reports, the incident took place when the woman doctor was returning home on her scooter after completing her duty.
