Dehradun: Finding renowned plastic surgeon and a Padma Shri awardee Dr Yogi Aeron guilty of medical negligence while conducting plastic surgery on a patient, the Uttarakhand Medical Council (UKMC) has recently suspended his licence for three months.

Apart from this, the State Medical Council has also issued a warning to the son of Dr Aeron, Dr. Kush Aeron.

It had been alleged by the patient that after the said surgery, she had developed breathing issues. Although the State Medical Council has penalized the doctor, he has claimed that the complaint had been made against him with "malicious intent" as the patient was "already battling depression" after her business closed during the pandemic.

Dr Aeron is a very well-known name among the medical fraternity. Back in 2020, Medical Dialogues had reported that the Union Government had conferred Padma Shri award, one of the highest civilian Awards of the country, to Uttarakhand based Dr Yogi Aeron. He is an octogenarian plastic surgeon and is known around the area of Dehradun for not just his skill but providing free treatment to burn patients who cannot afford the same.

With more than 5000 free surgeries to his credit, the 82 year old KGMU pass out is the go to man in the area as well as afar for burn victims and those attacked by animals. Even the government hospitals in the area are seen referring patients to his centre for treatment.

However, a patient brought charges of medical negligence against the doctor. The concerned patient, Neeta Thapa had approached Dr Aeron after she had developed a medium-sized wart just above her upper lip.

As per the latest media report by the Times of India, she alleged in her complaint before the Council that the doctor had taken a part of the skin from her forehead without her consent and had conducted a nose implant.

Navbharat Times adds that the doctor had charged Rs 2 lakh for the surgery. Besides, the Complainant claimed that Rs 10 lakh had been spent by her altogether for the entire process and as a result, she got burdened with debt.

The daily adds that after the complaint had been lodged, the State Medical Council formed an inquiry committee consisting of Dr. Madhubani of AIIMS Rishikesh, Dr. Praveen Panwar from PMHS and Dr. Anjali Nautiyal from the Council. Following the probe the Council suspended the licence of the doctor for three months and issued a warning to his son.

Dr. Aeron reported performed surgeries on the face of the Dehradun-based woman in between November 2018 and February 2020. It was alleged by her that following the procedure, she had developed breathing issues.

Although UKMC has temporarily suspended the licence of Dr Aeron, he claimed that the complaint had been made with "malicious intent". Mentioning that the patient was "already battling depression", Dr Aeron told TOI, "She had lost her beauty parlour business during the Covid lockdown."

"We are selfless service providers...we are open to providing her the best solutions even now. The surgeries done by me were in complete adherence to medical protocols," he added.
