Medical Council Warning: Telangana Doctors directed Not to Display Unrecognized Qualifications, Council to Choose a Vigilance Officer

Hyderabad: Taking cognisance of the complaints against allopathy doctors in the State practising with medical degrees or diplomas without valid recognition from the National Medical Commission (NMC), the Telangana State Medical Council (TSMC) has issued a warning to the doctors.

Advising the doctors not to display any unrecognized degrees or qualifications, the State Medical Council of Telangana recently directed them, "It is hereby advised to all the registered medical practitioners of modern scientific medicine that not to display any degree/qualification which is not recognized by the Medical Council of India (MCI)/ National Medical Commission (NMC) and not registered by the Telangana State Medical Council (TSMC)."

"Any doctor if he/she claims to be a specialist/super specialist in any branch without the specialty qualification in that branch and did not got registered in TSMC is illegal and unethical. Please make a note that violation of the above will amounts to disciplinary/ penal action," the Council further mentioned.

Speaking to Medical Dialogues, Dr. V Rajalingam, Chairman of TSMC said, "We found out that allopathy doctors are practicing while displaying qualifications that are not recognised by the National Medical Commission. After completing MBBS degrees, these doctors are undergoing some diploma, which are not recognised. We received around 50 complaints from our colleagues."

Explaining the matter, Dr. Rajalingam referred to the degree of a Diabetic Specialist and pointed out that there is no such degree or Diploma and treatment regarding Diabetes is provided by an Endocrinologist.

When asked about the future action by the Medical Council to deal with this issue and also the matter of quacks practicing in the State, he added, "We are setting up a separate cell to track down such doctors who are using non-recognised degree or diploma and also the quacks. There will be vigilance officer and a team will identify the non-recognised degrees and quacks."
