Daltonganj: In light of the acute shortage of faculty and infrastructure at Medinirai Medical College (MMC) in Daltonganj, a professor from the Physiology department has tendered his resignation, leaving only three professors to oversee the department.

With the professor's resignation, the medical college continues to reel under shortage of teaching faculty as now the number has reduced to three in the Physiology department. Assistant Professor Dr Atul Prakash and two tutors will now manage the department.

This came after the professor in the department of physiology, Dr Rakesh Kumar left the position for another job at a medical college in Madhya Pradesh which is suspected to be a permanent position.

As per a TOI news report, Professors in medical colleges are appointed by the state government on a contractual basis for two years. The decision to renew the contract is based on the profile report of the respective professor provided by the principal. Consequently, faculty members frequently opt to leave the state and join medical colleges in other states that provide permanent positions.

The Medinirai Medical College in Daltonganj is comprised of eight departments, namely anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathology, microbiology, pharmacology, community medicine, and forensic medicine and toxicology. Currently, only the departments of anatomy, biochemistry, and community medicine have a single professor each.

Principal Dr Kamender Prasad told The Daily, “A professor in the department of physiology, Dr Rakesh Kumar, has resigned for a medical college in Madhya Pradesh. Anyone will opt for a permanent job opportunity.”

Meanwhile, the medical college on Friday deposited the Rs 12 lakh fine imposed on it by the National Medical Commission (NMC) for the inadequate number of teaching faculty and infrastructure.

Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported that the National Medical Commission (NMC) imposed a Rs 12 lakh penalty on Medinirai Medical College (MMC), Daltonganj. Directing the institute to deposit the penalty by June 02, 2024, the Commission further informed that it will reassess the condition of the institute after two months.

The Medinirai Medical College Hospital (MMCH), Daltonganj recently came under the NMC scanner as the licence of its blood bank had expired on September 30, 2020. Directing the institute to renew the licence by July 10, the Apex Medical Regulator had warned to slap a Rs 6 Lakh penalty on the institute for non-compliance.
