Misconduct, misrepresentation, negligence! Gujarat medical council suspends 3 doctors
Doctor's license suspended
Ahmedabad: Taking action against three doctors found guilty of misconduct, misrepresentation of qualifications and alleged medical negligence, the Gujarat Medical Council has suspended their licences for periods ranging from six months to one year.
According to a press release issued by Dr Mahesh Patel, a member of the GMC executive council, the doctors are from Ahmedabad, Rajkot and Gir Somnath district. Two of them were found practising as MD (General Medicine) despite holding foreign medical degrees considered equivalent only to MBBS in India.
One of the doctors runs a multispecialty hospital in the Science City area of Ahmedabad, while the other is associated with a hospital in Rajkot. The council found that both had misled patients by presenting themselves as specialists and suspended their licences for six months.
As per latest TOI report, the release further stated that the Ahmedabad-based doctor is also facing a separate inquiry for allegedly misusing the licence of a gynaecologist to obtain empanelment with Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC). The alleged misuse involved forged stamps and signatures.
The third case involved a gynaecologist who was found guilty of medical negligence following the deaths of three women during pregnancy or childbirth at his hospital.
Following the deaths, the Chief District Health Officer constituted an inquiry committee, which submitted its report to the council. The report pointed to several lapses, including the absence of an anaesthetist during a surgical procedure, failure to follow post-operative protocols and non-cooperation with the council's inquiry committee.
Based on the findings, the council held the gynaecologist, who owns a hospital in Gir Somnath district, guilty of medical negligence and suspended his licence for one year.
The decisions were taken during GMC committee meetings held in January and February under the chairmanship of Dr Nitin Vora.
Medical Dialogues in 2024 reported that the GMC suspended the licenses of four specialist doctors in the State after finding them guilty of malpractice and negligence. Among these four doctors, the licences of three of them were suspended for one month. Meanwhile, the council suspended the fourth doctor's licence until he appeared before the council for a hearing.
