New Delhi: In a shocking case of violence against medical professionals, a doctor at Delhi’s Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital was allegedly assaulted by the relatives of a patient while collecting her blood samples.

The doctor, identified as Puneeth from the Department of Medicine, was on duty when the patient’s family members became angry over what they claimed was a delay in treatment.

According to news reports, the incident took place on Thursday at the hospital’s Emergency Care System (ECS) unit when the doctor, during blood sample collection, was assaulted by the relatives after they became angry, believing that the treatment of the patient was taking too long.

Speaking to the Indian Express, an officer said, “While on duty at the Emergency Care System (ECS) on the first floor during sample collection, a doctor from the Department of Medicine was assaulted by the relatives of a female patient. The relatives were angry as they believed the treatment was taking too long''.

The officer added that the patient, a woman, is still admitted to the hospital and remains unconscious. Meanwhile, her relatives fled the scene soon after the incident.

Following the assault on the doctor, the hospital authorities filed a complaint at the police station. However, no arrests have been made in this regard so far.

Medical Dialogues had recently reported that the King George’s Medical University (KGMU) administration has suspended four junior resident doctors from the orthopaedics department for allegedly assaulting an on-duty nursing officer after a reported clash between doctors and nursing staff at the trauma centre. Opposing the suspension, their colleagues staged a protest demanding that the order be revoked and that the nursing staff be suspended instead, alleging that he had assaulted an on-duty doctor during an operation. Both the doctors and the nursing officer registered FIRs against each other, accusing each other of assault.
