Renowned endocrinologist Dr Ambrish Mithal moves from Medanta to Join Max Healthcare

New Delhi: Max Healthcare today announced the joining of Padma Bhushan awardee Dr Ambrish Mithal as Chairman and Head of Endocrinology and Diabetes - Pan Max. He will be operating out of Max Super Specialty Hospital, Saket. Before joining Max Healthcare, Dr Mithal was Chairman and Head of Endocrinology and Diabetes division of Medanta, the Medicity, a super speciality hospital located at Gurgaon, Haryana.

This is the third major doctor movement from Medanta Medicity to Max Healthcare that has been announced in the past two months. Earlier in December 2019, Max healthcare announced the appointment of Padma Shri Cardiologist and Former Chairman – Cardiology and Electrophysiology at Medanta, Dr Balbir Singh as the new Chairman and Head, Cardiology for pan Max Healthcare

Just a few days later, Max Healthcare announced the appointment Leading Orthpedician and former Former Chairman Bone and Joint Institute Medanta, Dr SKS Marya as the new Chairman & Chief Surgeon, Max Institute of Musculoskeletal Sciences and Orthopaedics.

Dr Mithal is one of the leading endocrinologists in the country. With over three decades of experience, Dr Mithal has made a pioneering contribution to the development of endocrinology as a speciality in India in all its aspects- academic, clinical and social- and has played a key role in placing Indian endocrinology on the global map. In 2015, he was honoured by the Government of India with Padma Bhushan, the third-highest civilian award, for his outstanding contribution.

Talking about his vision for Max Healthcare's Endocrinology and Diabetes Department, Dr Ambrish Mithal, said, "I am delighted to be associated with Max Healthcare. My endeavour is to develop a Comprehensive Diabetes Program along with an Advanced Endocrinology Program that can be replicated across all network hospitals so that it ensures end-to-end support for all our patients and provide seamless best-in-class healthcare services to them. We will work closely with the clinicians within and outside our hospitals to ensure that we design a robust public awareness campaign/program to empower each patient with the correct knowledge and the attitude to deal with these diseases."

Dr Mithal has won numerous awards from medical and social bodies throughout his career. Recently, he has been nominated to the Governing Council of the National Health Authority, the apex body involved in implementing the ambitious population health coverage plan of the government. He has also been appointed (honorary) President, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Gorakhpur. In 2016, he was also awarded the International Osteoporosis Foundation President's award. In March 2017, Dr Mithal was awarded the BC Roy Award by the President of India (for the year 2015) for his contribution to the development of endocrinology in India.

Dr Mithal has been the technical advisor for the World Diabetes Foundation/ Jagran Pehel initiative on diabetes and pregnancy. He is also the first Indian to serve on international bodies like the WHO Global Taskforce on Osteoporosis and Committee of Scientific Advisors, Asia Pacific Advisory Council and Board of Governance of the International Osteoporosis Foundation. In addition, Dr Mithal has been President of the Endocrine Society of India, Indian Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ISBMR), and Bone and Joint Decade. He has also served two terms as Editor-in-Chief, Indian Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism. He was a member of the Governing Council of the Indian Council of Medical Research from 2014-2017 and is currently the President of the Endocrine and Diabetes Foundation.
