Doctor Assault

Hyderabad: In a shocking incident, a doctor was allegedly assaulted by a patient’s relative at a private hospital in Adilabad, triggering widespread protests by healthcare professionals and raising serious concerns over the safety of medical staff.

According to the news reports, the paediatrician was allegedly attacked on Thursday night following a dispute over medical expenses at his hospital. What began as an argument with hospital staff reportedly escalated into violence, with the assailant physically attacking the doctor. A video of the incident, now widely circulated on social media, shows the doctor being thrashed while staff members try to intervene.

In response, doctors from private hospitals and nursing homes staged a protest, taking out a rally through the town before staging a sit-in at Jayashankar Chowrasta. The agitation led to a traffic blockade, disrupting normal life as protesters raised slogans demanding the immediate arrest of those involved in the attack.

Protesting doctors expressed deep concern over what they described as an alarming trend of a rise in violence against medical professionals. They stated that despite working under stressful conditions and often risking their lives, they are increasingly becoming targets of aggression from patients’ relatives. The doctors demanded stronger security measures.

The protest received support from multiple political parties, including the BJP and Congress, as well as various civil society organisations.

District Superintendent of Police (SP) Dr. Janaki Sharmila, along with her team, rushed to the spot and ensured that traffic movement resumed on the road. She held discussions with the protesters, but the doctors remained adamant. Similarly, Nirmal Municipal Vice-Chairperson Ganesh Chakravarthi also held talks with the doctors over the issue. However, the protest continued on Friday, reports Telangana Today.
