Pioneer of HIV care, Padma Shri Prof Dr Alaka Deshpande no more

Mumbai: The medical fraternity is mourning the loss of a respected figure in HIV care and internal medicine with the death of Padma Shri awardee Prof Dr Alaka Keshav Deshpande, who passed away recently after a brief illness. Her demise has deeply saddened doctors, students, patients, and healthcare professionals across the country.
A renowned senior physician and social worker, Prof. Deshpande was widely known for her exceptional work with AIDS patients. She worked at Sir J J Hospital, Mumbai, where she played a major role in strengthening HIV care services in the country. With over 50 years of experience in public health, she had played a crucial role in developing the endocrine, critical care and AIDS units of the hospital.
