New Delhi: As the celebration of Doctor's day is all over the country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeted doctors on Doctors' Day, and said they play a key role in saving lives and making the planet healthier.

Doctors' Day is observed in the honour of noted doctor and former West Bengal chief minister Bidhan Chandra Roy, whose birth and death anniversaries fall on July 1.

The theme for this year's celebration of National Doctors' Day in India is "Family Doctors on the Front Line." The theme highlights the contribution of doctors who care for the whole family or a community.

 What is Doctors' Day?

National Doctors' Day gets celebrated all across the globe to acknowledge the contributions of doctors to individual lives and communities. It is the hard work and selfless deeds of the doctors that keep society healthy.

India has been celebrating National Doctors' Day on July 1 since 1991 to honour the memory of legendary physician Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy. However, this Doctors' Day is all the more special because, after the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, society has started truly acknowledging the selfless services of doctors who risked their lives every single day to save the people of the society.

Often considered the maker of modern West Bengal, Dr B.C. Roy was an excellent student throughout. He first pursued B. A from Patna College with Honors in Mathematics and afterwards he pursued his medical education at Calcutta Medical College. He is one of the rarest people who had obtained F.R.C.S and M.R.C.P degrees simultaneously.

"Doctors Day greetings to all hardworking doctors who play a key role in saving lives and making our planet healthier," Modi tweeted and shared a video montage with his voice-over hailing the role played by doctors.
