Navi Mumbai: A tragic road accident on the Mumbai-Goa highway has claimed the life of a 32-year-old doctor from Pune and left her 30-year-old colleague critically injured.

The accident took place on the evening of August 12, when their car, a WagonR, collided with a trailer while both vehicles were headed toward Mumbai.

According to the police, the doctors were returning from a trip to the Konkan region when the incident occurred. The car is said to have rammed into the trailer's chassis, resulting in extensive damage and fatal injuries to the doctor.

The doctor's colleague, who was driving, suffered grievous injuries and was initially rushed to the Sub-District Hospital in Mangaon. He was later transferred to a private hospital in Pune for advanced treatment. As of now, he remains unconscious and unable to provide a statement.

The accident led to a significant traffic snarl on the busy highway, with vehicles backed up for several kilometres. Officers from Goregaon Police Station quickly arrived at the scene and coordinated with local residents and emergency services to manage the situation.

The crane lifted the vehicle from the accident site, enabling traffic to continue. Initial inquiries indicate that the collision might have resulted from the vehicle's high speed and an inability to keep a safe distance from the container, and the container driver is presently being interrogated, reports the Free Press Journal.

The trailer driver, a 24-year-old man from Siddharth Nagar, Uttar Pradesh, has been booked in connection with the accident.

Speaking to TOI, Police sub-inspector, SN Raskar said, "As per eye witnesses who are autorickshaw drivers, the trailer driver was moving from the first lane to the second lane on the highway stretch. This has led to the mishap. Yadav has been served with a summons after the mishap. More details can be obtained only after Dr Bade is conscious."
