Guwahati: For the past 10 years, a man from Assam’s Sribhumi district had been impersonating as an obstetrician and gynaecologist, defrauding patients, assisting in around 50 cesarean sections and other gynaecological surgeries, and handling several pregnancy cases at a private hospital in Silchar since 2016. The accused has now been arrested in connection with the fraud.

He had previously worked as a fourth-grade employee in various hospitals. After gaining some basic knowledge, he decided to pose as a doctor using forged documents and purchased a fake MBBS degree from the black market by paying a large sum to a degree-selling racket.

After acquiring the fake degree, he worked as an obstetrician and gynaecologist at Shiva Sundari Nari Sikshashram for several years and was also employed at other private hospitals after moving to Silchar in 2016.

Two days ago, police uncovered his fraudulent activities and arrested him while he was performing a caesarean section at Shiva Sundari Nari Sikshashram. Following his arrest, he was produced before a local court, which sent him to a six-day police remand.

The arrest came after several police complaints were lodged against him for treating patients using a fake medical degree. Upon verifying his documents, authorities found that all his certificates were fake. He had been operating as a fake medical practitioner for several years and had even built a reputation in the locality.

Senior superintendent of police (SSP), Cachar, Numal Mahatta told HT, “Based on credible intelligence, we apprehended Pulak Malakar, 43, son of Muktaranjan Malakar of Badarpur, Sribhumi district, who was impersonating a gynaecologist and obstetrician using a forged MBBS certificate and documents.”

A case was registered against Malakar under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) — including 125 (negligent acts endangering human life), 271 (negligently spreading infections dangerous to life), 318(4) (cheating), 319(2) (cheating by personation), 336(4) (forgery with intent to harm reputation), 340(2) (using forged documents as genuine), and 112(2) (petty organized crime). A detailed investigation is underway.

During interrogation, the accused confessed to purchasing fake certificates by paying a substantial amount to a racket believed to be operating in Barak Valley and other parts of the country.

Commenting on this regard, Former Member of Parliament (MP) Rajdeep Roy said, "He was given an opportunity to work at the institute on the recommendation of a senior doctor on behalf of the authorities of Shiva Sundari Nari Sikshashram, and no one was aware of his forged credentials at the time. We appoint assistants in various departments based on recommendations and trust. He was referred by a senior doctor, so we gave him a chance. However, he never performed a C-section surgery independently; he only assisted in some cases,” Roy clarified.

He further mentioned that "Nearly a month ago, hospital authorities became suspicious of Malakar’s credentials and initiated an internal inquiry. We were conducting an internal investigation when police suddenly arrived and detained him on Saturday. We are now cooperating fully with the police in their investigation."
