Rajkot: In a shocking incident, a 60-year-old gynaecologist has been booked after he was allegedly found in an inebriated state during a surprise inspection by Gir Somnath district collector Digvijaysinh Jadeja at the Veraval Civil Hospital, Rajkot.  

It was found that the doctor consumed alcohol while being on duty on Thursday morning and the incident came to light when he was unable to respond properly to Jadega's questions during the inspection.

Jadega who paid a surprise visit to the hospital to investigate the condition of the hospital and check if the patients were receiving quality treatment also interacted with the staff to understand the work style of the hospital.

However, when Jadega spoke with the doctor, he suspected him of being drunk and informed the police. Following this, the police directed the doctor to undergo a blood test which revealed that he was intoxicated.

As a result, Resident Medical Officer (RMO) Dr P B Nariya filed a complaint at the police station and the doctor was booked under the Prohibition Act. He was later detained by the police for questioning, TOI reports.

Medical Dialogues team had reported in 2022 that the Ethics and Medical Registration Board (EMRB) of the National Medical Commission (NMC) has specified that intoxication during duty or off duty affecting professional practice will be considered as misconduct resulting in suspension.
