Jabalpur: In a shocking real-life incident that sounds like a movie plot, a man from the general category allegedly stole his tribal friend's identity and caste documents to fraudulently secure a medical seat and work as a doctor for seven years without his friend's knowledge until a patient's death exposed the truth.

According to the police investigation, the accused man completed his MBBS and got a degree by impersonating his friend's identity. Being a general category candidate, he used his friend’s Scheduled Tribe (ST) certificate to secure admission under the reserved quota.

The accused, identified as Satendra Kumar, used the name and caste certificate of his tribal friend, Brijraj Singh Uike, to get admission to a government medical college in Jabalpur. He completed his MBBS in 2018 and has worked at a private hospital ever since. Meanwhile, the real Uike, a poor painter, continued his life unaware that someone was living life comfortably by snatching his identity.

As per the latest TOI news report, the truth came out following a tragic incident in September 2024 when Manoj Mahawar filed a police complaint claiming his mother died due to medical negligence at a private hospital in Bhanwartal, where the accused was working as a doctor. He said his mother was admitted on September 1 and died the next day.

When he checked the hospital records, he found that the ICU duty doctor was listed as Dr Brijraj Singh Uike. Accordingly, he approached the police and informed them about the matter.

As police began investigating the doctor’s background, they were shocked to find that the real Brijraj Singh Uike was not a doctor at all but a wall painter. When they showed Uike a photo of the doctor, he immediately recognised him as his old friend Satendra Kumar.

Speaking to IANS, Brijraj, whose documents were used, said, "...He secretly kept my documents, maybe stole them. I wasn’t aware of it until 2–3 years later, when he had already completed half of his course..."

While investigating the case, police were struck by the similarities with the 2009 blockbuster '3 Idiots' where the main character tops an engineering course while studying under an assumed identity.

Police have now registered a case against Satendra for fraud and criminal conspiracy. They are currently searching for him. The officers also expressed concern over how Satendra, a general category candidate, managed to get through all identity and background checks during college admissions and hospital recruitment.
