New Delhi: Renowned Dental Surgeon, Dr Anil Kohli, has recently been conferred with the prestigious Excellence in Medicine Award by the Delhi Medical Association (DMA) on the occasion of its 111th Foundation Day in New Delhi.
This award recognises his outstanding and lifelong contributions to the medical profession, particularly in the field of dentistry.
Dr. Kohli began his illustrious journey at King George’s Medical College, Lucknow, one of India’s most prestigious medical institutions. Specialising in Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics, he earned a reputation for academic excellence. As a student, he was awarded the Gold Medal for Best House Surgeon and the esteemed S.S. Bhatnagar Award.
For his exceptional and distinguished service to the nation, Dr. Kohli was conferred the Padma Shri in 1992 and the Padma Bhushan in 2005- making him the first and only dental surgeon in India to have received both prestigious honours. In 2007, he was also awarded the Dr. B.C. Roy National Award.
He was honored with the honorary rank of Brigadier in the Army Dental Corps by the late President of India, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. For over two decades, he served as the dental surgeon to multiple Presidents and Prime Ministers of India.
As the former President of the Dental Council of India (DCI), Dr. Kohli led a transformative period in dental education. Under his leadership, the DCI implemented effective supervision and regulatory measures to enhance the quality of teaching and clinical practice, ensuring uniform standards of dental education across the country.
He also served as Dean of Dental Sciences at Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Faridkot, Punjab, and has been a member of the Board of Studies at several premier universities, including Lucknow University, Annamalai University, Bharati Vidyapeeth, HP and Madhya Pradesh University.
Dr. Kohli’s influence extends beyond national borders. He served as an Adjunct Professor in General Dentistry at both Tufts University and Boston University, USA. He is a Fellow of all three Royal Colleges of Surgeons — Glasgow, England, and Edinburgh. He holds over 10 honorary doctorate degrees conferred by universities around the world.
Besides being a Fellow/Member of many national as well as international Dental Associations, he currently serves as the Editor-in-Chief of the Indian Journal of Dental Research and represents Asia in IFEA, a global body of endodontics.
With more than 40 research publications in esteemed national and international journals, Dr. Kohli has contributed significantly to the advancement of dental science.
