Srinagar: Renowned Endocrinologist, Dr M Ashraf Ganie has been honoured with the “Subhash Mukherjee Memorial” Oration-2023 by the prestigious Endocrine Society of India (ESI).

The prestigious Oration has been awarded to Dr Ashraf for his extensive research in the field of endocrine & metabolic disorders. 

Dr Ashraf is currently a Professor of Endocrinology and Metabolism and Sub-Dean Research at SKIMS Srinagar. At SKIMS, Dr Ashraf has spearheaded various initiatives aimed at fostering a robust research environment, including the establishment of the Department of Clinical Research and the Medical Research Unit, among other similar facilities.

As per a media report in GK, he was recently appointed as the Chairman of the Joint Task Force established by the National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS) and Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS) to conduct a comprehensive study on health issues affecting populations residing in, or visiting, high-altitude areas, including Sub-Himalayan regions.

He was an Associate Professor at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. Dr Ashraf completed his MBBS from Government Medical College, Srinagar, MD in internal medicine from SKIMS and DM in Endocrinology from AIIMS, New Delhi.  

Dr Ashraf will be conferred with the Oration at ESICON-2023 to be convened at Hyderabad from 14th to 17th December 2023.

Subhash Mukherjee Oration has been instituted in memory of Dr. Subhash Mukherjee, an Indian scientist and physician who used in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) to become the architect of India's first and the world's second test tube baby.

Mukherjee created history in collaboration with Sunit Mukherji, a cryobiologist, and Dr. Saroj Kanti Bhattacharya, a gynaecologist. 

After completing his MBBS from Calcutta National Medical College, he worked as a Lecturer, Reader and Professor of Physiology at NRS Medical College, Kolkata from 1967 to 1975.
