Renowned Surgeon Professor Dr P V Chalapathi Rao no more

Hyderabad: Noted surgeon Dr P.V. Chalapathi Rao, a Dr. B.C. Roy National Awardee died at the age of 92 years on Sunday. A doyen in the field of Surgery from the Telugu states, he was conferred the prestigious award in 1995 for his yeomen contribution towards improving surgical education in the country.

Born on 16th November 1928, Professor Dr. P.V. Chalapathi Rao is one of the most renowned and distinguished Surgeons in India. He was conferred the prestigious Dr. B. C. Roy National Award in 1995 by late Shankar Dayal Sharma, the then Hon'ble President of India for his yeomen contribution towards improving Surgical education in the Country. This is the highest honour that can be achieved by a doctor in India.

Fondly referred to as 'Dr PVC Rao, he is the very FIRST Surgeon from the Telugu States to be elected President of the Association of Surgeons of India (ASI) in 1994. ASI is South Asia's largest and world's second-largest surgical Association that represents the entire surgical fraternity in India. With his son, Dr. P. Raghu Ram, a distinguished surgeon and Padma Shri awardee, is the current President ASI for 2020, it is a matter of record that for the first time in the 82 years history of this prestigious Organisation, two members from the same family have reached the highest position that can be achieved by a Surgeon practicing in the Country.

In 2009, Dr. Rao achieved the unique distinction to become the FIRST & the ONLY Surgeon from the Telugu States to have been conferred Fellowship Ad hominem, the highest recognition bestowed by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, which is the oldest Surgical College in the world for his outstanding contribution towards improving the art & science of Surgery in India for well over five decades. In the 514 years history of this Royal College, no other Surgeon from the Telugu States has ever received this high honour.

He was one of the YOUNGEST Professors of Surgery appointed during to Government service at the age of 38 years. He worked as Professor of Surgery in Government of the undivided Andhra Pradesh for well over 15 years He was well known to be a "soft-spoken" with extraordinary diplomatic skills and someone who re-defined fashion and style through his trademark Suits that wore.

He retired from Government service in 1983 after having served as Head of Department of Surgery at Osmania Medical College, the most prestigious Institute in the State. He later worked as Chief Surgeon in Abha (Saudi Arabia) for six years and as Chairman of the Durgabhai Deshmukh Hospital for well over a decade (1991 – 2002), where he championed a number of innovative initiatives to help the poor and needy patients. He later served as a Director of Medical Education @ KIMS Hospitals since its inception since 2004. During the 14 years that he served in the Institute, Dr. Rao played a pivotal lead role in developing the Dept. of Medical Education.
