Renowned Urologist late Dr GG Lakshmana Prabhu conferred with President's Award of Merit

Mangalore: Renowned urologist late Dr GG Lakshmana Prabhu was posthumously conferred the Excellence Award by President Draupadi Murmu during the 22nd convocation of the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences held at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi.

Kavita Prabhu, wife of the late Dr Lakshmana Prabhu, received a gold medal and certificate as the President’s Award of Merit.

Dr GG Lakshman Prabhu has practised urology in Mangaluru for the last 30 years and became synonymous with urology and nephrology through his right practice of the speciality. His observations and papers published on the subject have attracted attention worldwide.

Prabhu’s contribution to the medical world and the qualitative and quantitative development of the health sector is immense. The President said that the medical community has a responsibility to develop medical tourism and create a healthy society.

NBEMS President Dr Abhijat Shet, former President of the Urological Society of India, Dr Mahesh Desai, and Apoorva Chandra, Secretary, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Union Government, were present.

Dr Lakshmana Prabhu was popular for his selfless service as Head of the Urology Department of Mangaluru-based Kasturba Medical College, reports news agency PTI.

Dr Prabhu was recognized for his expertise in general urology, urolithiasis, andrology, urodynamics, recon-urology, urogynecology, and endourology.

He had worked as a specialist in Urology for 36 years and was greatly respected for his eye for detail, accuracy of diagnosis and empathetic treatment of patients.

He completed his MBBS from Mangalore University, Karnataka, India in 1986, MS in General Surgery from Mangalore University, Karnataka, India in 1989 and MCh - Genito-Urinary Surgery from Mangalore University, Karnataka, India in 1992 and DNB in urinary surgery in 1993.

As Secretary of the Urological Society of India, Dr Prabhu participated in many national and international conferences and presented personal papers. Dr Prabhu died on November 17, 2023, due to illness.

Medical Dialogues team had earlier reported that while attending to a patient on duty, renowned urologist, professor and head of the Urology Department at Kasturba Medical College Hospital (KMC) Dr G G Laxman Prabhu suffered cardiac arrest and unfortunately passed away at the age of 60.
