Madurai: Taking note of a shortage of doctors at a government hospital, the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has directed the state government to review and make decisions on a PIL seeking to hire doctors for emergency trauma care at Ramanathapuram government hospital.

The public interest litigation was filed by I. Kalanthar Ashik Ahamed of Ramanathapuram district who sought the appointment of a doctor to the emergency trauma care and a neurosurgeon in Ramanathapuram Government Hospital.

According to the petitioner, there is a lack of doctors at the emergency trauma care unit in the hospital to treat emergency patients amid rising accident cases reaching the hospital each day.

Earlier, the petitioner made representation to the Dean of the hospital and the same was forwarded to the State government. However, no steps were taken in this regard and no doctors were appointed which prompted the petitioner to approach the High Court.

As per a TOI news report, the petitioner said, "There was a need to appoint doctors to take care of emergency cases arising out of head injuries due to accidents taking place in and around Ramanathapuram."

Taking the matter into consideration, a Division Bench of Justices R. Suresh Kumar and G. Arul Murugan directed the State to consider the representation made and take necessary steps to appoint a doctor to trauma care in two months.

Following the direction, the court then disposed of the petition.

Medical Dilaogues team had earlier reported that the Madras High Court recently observed that doctors cannot adopt a pick-and-choose attitude while treating patients and, poor patients receiving treatment from government-run hospitals cannot be treated differently.
