Chennai: Demanding "non-controversial" members from the State Medical Council, the doctors in Tamil Nadu recently urged the Health Ministry officials to bring back the old system of nomination and elect the Directors of medical education, medical and rural health services as the members of TNMC.
In this regard, recently the doctors belonging to the Federation of Government Doctors Association (FOGDA) recently made a representation to the State Health Minister and requested for a reform in the Apex medical body in the State of Tamil Nadu.
As per the rules, among the seven members of TNMC, three are nominated by the State Government. Before 2010, the Government officials i.e. the three directors of the Health Health Department used to be nominated for the State Medical Council. However, this practiced changed later and the State started nominating members as per its dispensation.
The latest media report by The Hindu adds that FOGDA has recently urged the State Health Minister to bring back the old practice. Four associations including Democratic Tamil Nadu Government Doctors Association, Service Doctors and Post Graduates Association (SDPGA), Tamil Nadu Medical Officers Association and Government All Doctors Association are part of FOGDA.
Their main demand is to bring back the old system for nominating members of TNMC since they figured it was better having directors, deans or eminent professors as the Council members.
Opining that the State should nominate "non-controversial" doctors for the TNMC, A. Ramalingam, general secretary of SDPGA told the daily, "These members should upload the dignity of doctors and the State's rights."
Meanwhile, the representative of another association explained that they were expecting reforms in the council and the appointed members who would represent the State should reflect the government's policy decisions such as the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test.
