Traffic violation case: Three cops suspended for manhandling 2 doctors, extorting Rs 25000
Mumbai: Holding three police personnel responsible for allegedly assaulting two doctors and extorting money as a penalty, the Mumbai police department has suspended them based on the complaint of a doctor.
The official said the alleged incident took place on April 25 when two doctors were brought to the Samta Nagar police station in suburban Kandivali for violating traffic norms.
The three police personnel were suspended based on the complaint of the doctor who claimed that they were treated as criminals at the police station and moreover were brutally assaulted by them.

The doctors were taken to the interrogation room where they were allegedly hit with a belt and made to stand at the police station for three hours. One sub-inspector and a police naik extorted Rs 25,000 from them, he said.
The doctors then approached senior police officials and narrated their ordeal at the police station. A preliminary inquiry found that there was truth in the doctors’ version, he said.
A police inspector among the accused, who was on duty at the time has also been placed under suspension for failing to instruct his juniors to take lawful action and guide them, the official said, adding a departmental inquiry is on against the cops.
While investigating the case, it was found in the CCTV footage from the police station that the doctors were entering and coming out of the inquiry room.
“During the inquiry, the senior police officer also observed that the day police inspector seemed to ignore how the two doctors were made to stand for three hours for traffic violations. Pawar also failed to ask questions or instruct his juniors regarding lawful action regarding the alleged traffic rule violation. He also failed to supervise the situation and guide juniors on time, ensuring timely action, and was thus found guilty,” a police officer, requesting anonymity informed The Indian Express.
“The Additional Commissioner of Police for the north region, Rajiv Jain, supervised the inquiry and after finding evidence against the three policemen in the preliminary inquiry, suspended them from duty. The three policemen have been suspended, pending a departmental inquiry,” the police officer added.
