Juvenile Convicted in Vellore Gang Rape Case

Vellore: A 17-year-old convict involved in the 2022 gang rape case of a female doctor was sentenced to 20 years of imprisonment by the POSCO Fast Track Court at the Combined Court Complex in Vellore. This comes after a prior conviction in January, when the Fast Track Mahila Court sentenced four other accused to 20 years of imprisonment each and imposed a fine of Rs. 25,000 on each of them.

Medical dialogues recently reported that the Mahila Court convicted four men for gang-raping a doctor after abducting her in an auto in Katpadi in 2022, sentencing them to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment. The incident had caused political outrage in the state, leading to the opposition parties demanding stringent action on the perpetrators.

The verdict was delivered by Judge D. Sivakumar, who also imposed a fine of Rs. 23,000 on the juvenile. The crime, which took place past midnight on March 16, 2022, involved five individuals, including the convicted juvenile.

According to the police reports, a woman doctor from Bihar and her colleague, who is originally from Nagpur in Maharashtra, had been returning from a movie at a cinema hall in Katpadi. They boarded a shared autorickshaw that was already occupied by four other men. However, instead of being dropped off at their intended destination in Old Town via the Green Circle on the Chennai-Bengaluru Highway, the driver took them to Sathuvachari.

The accused attacked the duo and three of them gang-raped the doctor after parking the car in a remote area next to a cemetery. In addition, the accused stole two sovereign gold jewellery and Rs. 40,000.

Following the incident, the woman returned to Bihar and filed an online complaint with the then Vellore Superintendent of Police, S. Rajesh Kannan, on March 22. A case has been registered by the Vellore North police against the accused under various Sections of the Indian Penal Code (PIC) and Section 4 of the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013.
