Indore: A day after the horrifying attack on a Chennai-based oncologist, a brutal assault has been reported from Indore's Maharaja Yeshwantrao Hospital (MYH) wherein where several doctors and staff were attacked with belts, rods, and sticks over the non-availability of a bed.

The video capturing the incident went viral on social media showing a group of armed men brutally beating the doctors and hospital staff along with vandalising the premises. 7 doctors got injured due to the assault, as per the Free Press Journal report.

According to the daily, the incident occurred at the Chacha Nehru Hospital—the pediatric wing of MY Hospital in Indore on Tuesday night at around 11 pm when the relative of a child admitted at the PICU requested a separate bed. On this, the doctors informed that no beds were available at that moment which led to an altercation between doctors and the patient's kin.

Soon the altercation turned into a violent clash when the kin allegedly started abusing the on-duty doctors. Even though the doctors tried to clarify the situation, the attendants became more enraged and threatened to kill the doctors if their demands were not met, reports FPJ.

The situation escalated quickly and the kin began assaulting the doctors and security staff. Then, they contacted and brought a dozen armed men into the hospital, according to FPJ report. After entering the hospital, the armed men reportedly began beating the doctors which could be seen in the video. The circumstances captured in the video showed the men brutally thrashing the doctors, vandalising the property and destroying the medical records.

Later, the police arrived at the spot immediately after getting the information about the incident. Due to their intervention, the situation was brought under control and two assailants were caught red-handed from the scene. Following the incident, the police have registered an FIR against them under sections 121 (1), 132, 296, 351 (2) and 3(5) of the BNS based on the complaint of the doctors.

Expressing concern over the alleged brutal attack on the doctors, the Junior Doctors Association (JDA) has issued a seven-day ultimatum to the authorities of MY Hospital and MGM Medical College, demanding a safer workplace environment for the doctors.

The association in its ultimatum urged the authorities to strengthen security arrangements within the time frame. If failed to implement urgently, the association has threatened that they will initiate a strike in this regard. It also claimed that the issue with security arrangements was made three months ago following the RG Kar Hospital incident. However, no measures have been taken so far by the government. "Working in an insecure environment, where doctors constantly fear being attacked, is unacceptable," stated the JDA.

Meanwhile, the doctors of the MY Hospital have filed a formal complaint with the hospital superintendent describing the incident in detail. They have demanded a thorough investigation into the incident.

In response, MGM Medical College dean Dr Sanjay Dixit told TOI, "A proposal has been prepared to increase 110 security personnel."

Medical DIalogues recently reported about the attack on an oncologist on duty yesterday at Kalainagar Centenary Hospital in Chennai. After several stab wounds in his neck, head, and upper chest, the doctor was rushed to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the same hospital in critical condition.
