This marks the first instance of the state government nominating new members to the medical council after the BJP came to power in West Bengal. Under the existing rules, the government has the authority to replace nominated members, while elected members of the council cannot be removed without conducting fresh elections.

According to sources, Dr Pranat Tudu, MLA from Binpur, Dr Kalyan Ashis Mukherjee of BJP’s state doctors’ cell, and Dr Mrinmoy Adhikary, assistant professor at Murshidabad Medical College, will be the new nominees of the ruling party who will replace Trinamool Congress-nominated doctors, reports Millennium Post.
The nominations come amid continuing controversies surrounding the council during the previous government. Some members had faced allegations of corruption, while the recent WBMC election was also challenged in court over alleged irregularities in the election process.
Soon after the BJP came to power in the state, the Health Department had issued an administrative order terminating the tenures of three WBMC members who were nominated during the TMC government.
The latest nominations are expected to bring changes in the representation of the West Bengal Medical Council, which is responsible for regulating medical professionals and maintaining standards of medical practice in the state.
Medical Dialogues had previously reported that Alleging that West Bengal Medical Council (WBMC) is involved in "unlawful and unethical activities", a social services organisation, has urged the Chief Minister and Health Minister of the State to intervene. On the 25th anniversary of the organisation, People for Better Treatment, an open public rally was held recently in front of the Medical Council office, and Dr. Kunal Saha, the President of PBT, led the rally alongside 'victims of medical negligence.'
