100-Bed Block at Civil Hospital Nears Completion in Gurgaon

Gurugram: The much-awaited expansion of Civil Hospital is on track, with the likelihood of the 100-bed block being ready by next year. The Public Works Department (PWD) has invited tenders for the fifth floor, with the contract expected to be awarded within the next 15 days.

Construction is set to begin within a month after the tender process is finalized, bringing the project closer to completion. Currently, around 80% of the work has been completed, with the hospital reaching the fourth floor of the new block. This expansion is part of a long-term strategy to address the hospital's overcrowding and enhance patient care.

According to news reports, Civil Hospital, which sees over 2,500 visitors daily at its outpatient department (OPD) and admits more than 200 patients on average, is under significant strain due to a shortage of beds. This has led to challenges in meeting the growing demand for healthcare services. To address this issue, the Directorate approved the construction of a 100-bed extension building in 2018. With an estimated cost of Rs 90 crore, the project was expected to be completed by January 2024.

The original plan for the construction, which was budgeted at Rs 90 crore, was expected to be completed by January 2024. However, as of now, the construction is still ongoing, with roughly 60% of the work completed. In November 2019, Rs 47 crore was allocated to the project, but the remaining Rs 43 crore necessary for completion has not yet been provided by the government as of 2024.

According to Jagran, a plan was developed for a 32-bed ICU and centralized air conditioning on the fifth floor of the under-construction block. A proposal for Rs 35 crore for the centralized air conditioning and Rs 12 crore for the ICU ward was submitted. However, this amount was later increased by an additional Rs 4 crore. As a result, the files were forwarded multiple times to the government requesting Rs 47 crore instead of the initially estimated Rs 43 crore.

This five-story building will feature a dedicated floor for ICU patients, offering critical care for individuals with severe high blood pressure, serious infections, and accident victims. This specialized unit will allow for real-time monitoring and immediate medical intervention, improving the quality of care at the district hospital. The procurement of medical equipment for patient examinations will commence once the building is completed.
