Belagavi: In a tragic incident, a 31-year-old woman passed away after giving birth at the Belagavi Institute of Medical Sciences (BIMS) on Tuesday. Her family members staged a protest at the hospital, accusing the doctors of negligence in her death.

The woman, identified as a resident of Nilaji village, had been admitted to the hospital the previous night, where she underwent a Caesarean section and delivered a baby girl.

According to the family, the woman was initially due to give birth on January 22, but labor was delayed as she did not experience any pain. She was admitted to BIMS for delivery on January 27. Since labor pains had not started, the doctors decided to perform a C-section. However, following the procedure, her condition worsened, leading the family to request a referral to another hospital. Their request was reportedly denied by the medical staff.

The family members have claimed that they were not informed or properly consulted before the procedure. They allege that their consent for the C-Section was obtained under questionable circumstances.

Speaking to TOI, a relative of the deceased alleged, "When the doctors said that the delivery would not take place on Monday, her husband went home. Later, he was informed that a cesarean section was performed. Meanwhile, the hospital staff took her husband's signature on a blank sheet of paper. The doctors said that the patient's condition was critical, at 12 midnight. When the family members said that they will take Anjali to another hospital, the hospital staff did not permit it. The woman died due to the negligence of the doctors"

Medical staff reported that her condition rapidly deteriorated due to sudden variations in her blood pressure, and despite the doctors’ best efforts, she passed away.

Dr. Ashok Kumar Shetty, the Director of BIMS, addressed the situation and clarified that the medical team suspects AFE as the cause of Anjali's death.

According to The Hindu, he said, “Our doctors suspect that the woman died due to amniotic fluid embolism (AFE). It has probably occurred due to the fact that she suffered seizures and low BP after delivery. BIMS doctors conduct around 10,000 deliveries in a year and around 40% are Caesarean sections. Conditions like AFE are life-threatening and it is very difficult to save patients who suffer such conditions.”

In response to the incident, officers from the APMC Yard Police Station visited the hospital for an investigation. The woman's body has been sent for post-mortem examination to confirm the exact cause of death.
