33-year-old woman and newborn die at Hyderabad Hospital, kin alleges negligence

Hyderabad: The death of a seven-month pregnant woman and her newborn daughter at a private hospital in Banjara Hills has triggered allegations of medical negligence, prompting a criminal case against the attending gynaecologist and hospital staff. 

According to the news reports, the 33-year-old deceased was working as a constable at the Khulsumpura police station, was seven months pregnant with twins and was admitted for emergency treatment due to severe abdominal pain and heavy bleeding. Her husband, a 34-year-old software engineer, rushed her to the hospital in the early hours of June 10.

Doctors reportedly informed the family at around 12:30 p.m. on June 10 that one of the unborn twins, a girl, had died in the womb. A surgical procedure was eventually carried out at 6 a.m. the following day, June 11. After the procedure, hospital staff handed over the body of the stillborn girl to her husband and informed him that the surviving male infant was in critical condition in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

Tragically, later that evening at around 7:30 p.m., while the husband was attending the burial of his daughter, he was informed by doctors that his wife had died during post-surgical treatment.

Following this, the husband filed a formal complaint with the police, accusing the attending gynaecologist and the hospital administration of negligence, citing delays in treatment and inadequate post-operative care.

Responding to the complaint, the Khairatabad police registered a case on Thursday under Section 106(1) (causing death due to negligence) of the BNS against the gynaecologist, hospital staff, and others.

According to TOI, the Police have sent the constable's body for autopsy. "The case file and the post-mortem report will be submitted for review by the medical board. Based on the board's findings, we will proceed further with the investigation," said Khairatabad sub-inspector Sandeep Reddy.
