374 Nagpur hospitals inspected, notices issued for regulatory violations

Nagpur: Health authorities in Nagpur have found multiple regulatory violations during inspections of 374 out of 660 registered hospitals, with deficiencies ranging from biomedical waste management and excess bed capacity to non-display of mandatory patient information and inadequate parking facilities.

Hospitals found violating prescribed norms have been issued notices and, in several cases, fined. The inspection drive is focused on checking whether private hospitals are complying with mandatory requirements related to patient facilities, waste disposal, approved bed strength and information that must be made available to patients and visitors.

Of the facilities inspected, 73 were found to have inadequate biomedical waste management arrangements. Authorities have imposed an initial penalty of Rs 5,000 on each of these hospitals and directed them to take corrective measures to ensure biomedical waste is handled and disposed of according to prescribed norms, Nagpur Today reported.

Another 21 hospitals were found operating with more beds than their approved capacity. These facilities have also been fined Rs 5,000 each and instructed to remove the additional beds.

The inspections also highlighted gaps in basic hospital infrastructure and mandatory disclosures. Sixteen hospitals were found without the required parking arrangements, while another 16 had failed to display mandatory information for patients and visitors.

The missing information included treatment rate charts, helpline numbers, details of biomedical waste disposal and patients’ rights. Notices have been issued to the hospitals concerned, directing them to rectify the deficiencies.

The violations identified so far indicate gaps not only in hospital infrastructure but also in compliance with basic regulatory and patient-information requirements. Authorities have said corrective action is being initiated against facilities where deficiencies were detected.

According to Nagpur Today, the inspection drive is aimed at ensuring that private hospitals comply with prescribed regulations and provide patients with the facilities and information mandated under the rules. Authorities are expected to continue inspections of the remaining registered hospitals.
