In December last year, the institute had set up a nephrology department. AIIMS-Patna director Dr Gopal Krushna Pal said that they could expand their healthcare services due to the new recruitments of faculties at different branches. The nephrology department also began after the arrival of new recruits.

Speaking to TOI, Dr Pal said, "Even cardiology and neurology department, which were closed after super specialists had left, has again been made functional." He added that there is a good inflow of patients to these new facilities.

During the first phase of recruitment performed in November 2022, the hospital appointed 91 faculties for different departments. In the second recruitment phase conducted in February this year, 40 faculties were appointed, thus bringing the total number of recruitments to 131.

The institute is also planning to set up a separate critical care hospital with a 300-bed intensive care unit (ICU) by November 2024 for critically ill patients. The central public workers' department is looking after the construction work and the construction work has already begun. Around Rs 120 crore has been sanctioned by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MOHFW) for this project.

Meanwhile, a burn hospital would start functioning in August this year, and a budget for the construction of a separate academic block has also been approved by the ministry. The new block would be used for research and academic activities.

Further, an advanced cancer centre, a maternity and child hospital, and an advanced centre for geriatric medicine would also be coming up on 25 acres of land promised by the state government.
