Faridabad: Amrita Hospital has successfully performed two pulmonary valve replacements using Harmony Transcatheter Pulmonary Valve (TPV) system, marking the hospital as the first one in India as well as Asia to use this advanced procedure.

The surgeries were conducted on a 42-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman. Both of them have been suffering from a heart condition called Tetralogy of Fallot at very young age. To treat this condition, one of the heart’s valves (the pulmonary valve) must be excised in order to relieve obstruction at the valve.

This leaves a leaking valve which is tolerated for years but finally, in majority of cases, a new valve must be placed in order to prevent progressive leaking of valve and damage to the heart muscle.

Both the patients were faced with leaking valves. After initial consultation at their local healthcare facilities, they were referred to Armita Hospital, Faridabad’s Cardiology department where they received the required guidance and surgeries to overcome their challenges.

Dr S Radhakrishnan, HoD, Pediatric Cardiology, Amrita Hospital, Faridabad said, “Tetralogy of Fallot, although rare, affects approximately one out of 2,500 newborns annually, making it one of the more prevalent congenital heart conditions. This birth defect induces cyanosis, or blueness of the body, due to oxygen deprivation, which can be life-threatening if severe. Corrective surgery typically resolves cyanosis, enabling patients to lead normal lives. However, decades later, fatigue and breathlessness may arise due to a leaking pulmonary valve.”

The Harmony valve offers a groundbreaking solution, replacing the faulty valve without invasive open-heart surgery. This innovative approach signifies a significant leap forward in cardiac care, providing patients with a non-traditional yet effective treatment option.

Dr Sushil Azad, Principal Consultant, Pediatric Cardiology, Amrita Hospital, Faridabad said, “The Harmony TPV insertion procedure, which lasted two hours, entailed accessing the patient's leg vein and deploying the preloaded valve at the designated site, all without the need for open-heart surgery. The surgery was seamless and uncomplicated. This minimally invasive approach ensures rapid recovery, with patients typically discharged within 2 days, free from scarring.”

“We at Amrita Hospital, Faridabad are proud to be Asia's first hospital to perform this procedure. Our team is filled with delight and gratitude to be able to offer our patients a minimally invasive solution that revolutionizes the treatment of congenital heart conditions. This milestone reaffirms our dedication to providing innovative and effective treatments, ensuring our patients receive the best possible care. With this landmark, we hope to turn a new page in the book of cardiac care,” said Dr. Sanjeev Singh, Medical Director, Amrita Hospital, Faridabad.

Both the patients are undergoing regular check-ups following the procedure. The initial check-up took place one month after the procedure for both patients. Subsequent check-ups are scheduled at six-month intervals, followed by annual check-ups thereafter.

“I was thrilled to be discharged within just 2 days, pain-free and without any visible scars. It felt like a miracle!” said the 42-year-old patient. “Within a week, I could go back to my daily routines. I am extremely grateful for the swift recovery and seamless procedure,” added the other one.
